CIC34 Community Interest Company Report

Every Community Interest Company must file a CIC34 report each year, showing how its activities have benefited the community it was set up to serve.

Bowdon Accounting helps CIC directors prepare clear, accurate CIC34 reports and files them alongside the annual accounts, so your community impact is properly recorded and your filings stay on time.

What Is a CIC34 Report?

The CIC34 is the annual community interest company report. It is filed at Companies House together with your CIC's annual accounts, by the same deadline, and is reviewed by the Office of the Regulator of Community Interest Companies.

The report explains what your CIC has done during the year, who has benefited and how you have involved your stakeholders. It also covers directors' pay and any transfers of assets.

CIC reports are placed on the public register, so funders, partners and the public can read them. A well-written CIC34 is a compliance requirement, and also a chance to show the difference your organisation makes.

What the CIC34 Report Covers

The report is split into four main parts. We help you complete each one accurately and consistently with your accounts.

  • Part 1

    Activities & Community Benefit

A description of what the CIC did during the year and how those activities benefited the community.

  • Part 2

    Stakeholder Consultation

Who your stakeholders are, how you consulted them, what they told you and what you did in response.

  • Part 3

    Directors' Remuneration

Details of payments to directors, where these are not already fully disclosed in the accounts.

  • Part 4

    Transfers of Assets

Any transfers of assets made other than for full consideration, reflecting the CIC's asset lock.

Simplified or Detailed Report?

There are two versions of the CIC34. Which one you file depends on how your CIC is structured and whether it has made certain payments to investors.

  • Simplified CIC34

Used by most CICs, including all CICs limited by guarantee and share-limited CICs that have not paid dividends or performance-related interest.

  • Detailed CIC34

Required if the CIC has paid performance-related interest on a debt or debenture, or, for CICs limited by shares, has declared or proposed a dividend this year or declared one in any of the previous four years. It includes additional financial information.

Not sure which applies? We will confirm the correct report as part of our service.

Writing a Strong CIC34 Report

The CIC34 does not need to be long, but it should be specific. Reports that simply restate the CIC's objects do little to show its impact. We encourage directors to:

  • Give real examples of projects, services and outcomes from the year
  • Include numbers where possible, such as people supported, sessions delivered or volunteers involved
  • Explain how stakeholders were consulted and what changed as a result
  • Keep the report consistent with the figures in the annual accounts

Keeping simple notes of activities, feedback and outcomes throughout the year makes the report far quicker to prepare at year-end.

CIC34 Reporting: Frequently Asked Questions

Does every CIC have to file a CIC34 report?

Yes. Every Community Interest Company must file a CIC34 community interest company report each year, together with its annual accounts at Companies House.

When is the CIC34 report due?

The CIC34 is due at the same time as your annual accounts. For most CICs, that is 9 months after the end of the financial year. A CIC's first accounts and report are normally due 21 months after incorporation.

Is the CIC34 report made public?

Yes. CIC reports are placed on the public register at Companies House, so anyone, including funders and partners, can read them.

Which version of the CIC34 do we need?

Most CICs file the simplified report. The detailed report is needed if the CIC has paid performance-related interest on a debt or debenture, or, for CICs limited by shares, has declared or proposed dividends in the current year or declared dividends in any of the previous four years.

Can you prepare the CIC34 if you don't prepare our accounts?

Our CIC34 service is normally provided with our CIC annual accounts service, as the two are filed together and need to be consistent. Get in touch and we can discuss your situation.
